It feels so good to say, ‘college football is back,’ doesn’t it?
Week 0 is becoming more and more popular as the years go on and this year it proved to be an amazing kickoff to the 2023 College football season.
The day started in Dublin, Ireland where the Notre Dame Fighting Irish posted a 42-3 victory over the Navy Midshipmen. In which, Notre Dame QB Sam Hartman looked very comfortable with his new offense tossing for 251 yards and 4 touchdowns on 19 completions.
Some other notable scores:
Jacksonville State; 17 – UTEP; 14
JVST stole their first FBS victory over UTEP on Saturday in a game that came all the way down to a game-saving interception by DB Jeremiah Harris.
UMASS; 41 – New Mexico State; 30
Quarterback Taisun Phommachanh (Foh-Mah-Chawn) willed the Minutemen to victory by throwing for 192 yards and rushing for 96 yards and a touchdown. Along with the effort of RB Kay’Ron Lynch-Adams (79 yards and 2 TD’s) — UMASS was able to pull off a surprising Week 0 victory.
#6USC; 56 – SJSU; 28
This game shaped up to be an exciting game up until the end of the third quarter when USC began pulling away. Obviously, defending Heisman winner, Caleb Williams, put on a show throwing 18 of 25 for 238 yards and 4 touchdowns. One of which going to the electric true-freshman, Zachariah Branch who racked up 232 all-purpose yards including his 96 yard kickoff return touchdown all in his debut.
MVP of the Week:
For week 0, I’m going to give this recognition to Caleb Williams of USC. Williams seemed to pick up right where he left off at the end of last season; He looked poised, smooth, and smart. There were very few flaws in his game on Saturday and I think it’s safe to say that same kind of play can be expected from him for the remainder of the season.
Game Of The Week Prediction:
#5 LSU vs. #8 FSU (7:30pm, Sunday September 3rd, ABC)
For me, it’s hard to pick any other matchup than the Camping World Kickoff. Quarterbacks Jayden Daniels (LSU) and Jordan Travis (FSU) will highlight this high-powered matchup which has the chance to be maybe one of the best games of the season…as it was last year.
ESPN’s Matchup Predictor currently has LSU (65.0%) as the favorite to win and has FSU (35.0%) as the underdog.
