Training camp for every team in the NFL is now in full swing. There has been a lot that has come out of the coaches and players being back on the field. There have been a few unfortunate injuries, some new headlines, and a plethora of fun to be had.
Today (Thursday, July 27) was a busy day filled with all kinds of different storylines — and an article covering everything feels appropriate. Let’s dive right into the madness.
Major Headlines
Dalvin Cook Set To Visit Jets
According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, four-time Pro Bowl running back Dalvin Cook will be visiting the New York Jets this weekend. He is expected to be in attendance on Friday as well as on Sunday.
Reports around the league indicate that the Jets are highly motivated to get a deal done with Cook and his agent before they leave the building the visit elsewhere. It seems as if Cook’s next visit would be with the New England Patriots.
Breece Hall, New York’s young running back, is coming off of a torn ACL that he suffered in his rookie season and the addition of Cook would take some of the weight of the running game off of Hall’s shoulders. Cook was a 1,000+ yard rusher with the Minnesota Vikings every season between 2019-2022, but was released due to his large salary.
Jalen Ramsey Goes Down, Suffers Knee Injury
Miami Dolphins cornerback Jalen Ramsey was on his second day with his new team after being traded from the Los Angeles Rams this offseason — and he may have to wait a little bit longer to make his debut with his new team.
On Thursday afternoon, it was reported that Ramsey went down at Dolphins’ practice and had to be carted off into the locker room.
Further testing, including an MRI, revealed that Ramsey suffered a torn meniscus, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. He will undergo surgery on Friday morning. During the surgery, the surgeons will make the decision to either remove his meniscus or top repair his meniscus. The recovery time for a repair is longer than the recovery time of a removal of the meniscus.
Rapoport reported later on Thursday evening that doctors are expected to repair the meniscus and that a return to the field in December is the likely pathway.
Ramsey took to Twitter to make sure everyone knew that he would be back in no time:
Joe Burrow Suffers Major Lower Leg Scare
Cincinnati Bengals superstar quarterback Joe Burrow is in talks with the organization on a contract extension that would make him the highest-paid player in the NFL — and for a few hours, it seemed as if his potential extension was at risk.
After a solid showing all day, Burrow went down with a non-contact calf injury on one of the final plays of the Bengals’ practice. As the entire NFL community held their breath, very little was said about the status of Burrow. All that Bengals head coach Zac Taylor said about the injury was that it was a calf injury.
On Thursday evening, ESPN reporter Dianna Russini broke the silence. She reported that Burrow’s injury was just a calf strain and that he avoided a major injury such as a torn achilles. Multiple people around the Bengals organization described the injury as the “best-case scenario.”
There are three different levels of calf strains. If Burrow is diagnosed with a Grade One strain, it is likely that he will miss one-to-three weeks of training camp and will be right back on the field. If it is a Grade Three strain, he could miss upwards of three months and surgery may be an option for the star quarterback.
Minor Headlines
Devon Witherspoon Remains Only Unsigned Rookie
Seattle Seahawks rookie defensive back Devon Witherspoon was drafted number-five overall. Heading into day three of training camp, he is still unsigned.
The holdup, according to multiple people around the league, seems to be the timing of the payout of his signing bonus.
The Seahawks have a history of preferring to allocate the signing bonuses to later dates.
Garrett Wilson Limps Off Of Practice Field
New York Jets second-year wide receiver Garrett Wilson limped off of the practice field today and didn’t return to practice. He is expected to be okay.
Wilson has been solidifying himself as the Jets’ number-one wide receiver since the arrival of Aaron Rodgers. The connection with Rodgers has been torching the Jets’ defense.
Saleh: Breece Looks ‘Freaking Good’
New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh was asked about Breece Hall in an appearance on the Michael Kay Show on ESPN:
“Breece looks freaking good man… Like he can run through a brick wall.”
Saleh also said that Hall has gotten his top speed up to 23 miles per hour.
Bengals Extend DE Hendrickson
The Cincinnati Bengals announced on Thursday morning that they signed edge rusher Trey Hendrickson to a one-year contract extension through the 2025 season.
According to Rapoport, Hendrickson will now get “$21 million in new money, including an $8 million signing bonus and $5 million in new money this season.”
The move comes at a time when the Bengals are faced with the decision of paying Burrow and their two star receivers, Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins.
LaFleur: Aaron Jones Has Stepped Up As a Leader
Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur said that there is “no question” that star running back Aaron Jones has stepped up as a leader this off-season. This comes at a time where they are searching for leaders with the departure of longtime quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
Budda Baker Receives $2.4M Raise
Cardinals star defensive back Budda Baker received a raise prior to training camp, Rapoport tweeted on Thursday. Baker will be getting $2.4M in bonuses and incentives this year including a $300K signing bonus. He also received a raise for next season.
