Panthers Exploring Trade for Jimmy Garoppolo

The Carolina Panthers are in desperate need of a starting quarterback.

Carolina has Sam Darnold on its roster, but after a sub-par year, and an experiment of Cam Newton as their starting quarterback, the Panthers find themselves looking for a true starting quarterback.

Carolina tried to trade for now-Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson, but Watson did not want to go there. They were one of the final four teams in on Watson, but the Browns eventually got him.

Now, they look to the future and to who they can get. Guys like Jimmy Garoppolo and Baker Mayfield are both on the trade market after their teams have moved in favor of another quarterback. Garoppolo is going to be replaced by second-year year quarterback Trey Lance and Mayfield was replaced by Watson, who as noted earlier, was traded to Cleveland.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Panthers are exploring all of their options at quarterback and Jimmy Garoppolo is one of them. Carolina also has the inside track to land Mayfield, according to Browns beat-writer Mary Kay Cabot.

Fowler went on to say that the Panthers have done their homework on Garoppolo, but that teams are concerned that Garoppolo may fail his physical due to a recent shoulder surgery. He might not be able to throw until the summer and that is playing a big factor in him being traded or not.

A source told The Sports Place’s Arye Pulli that the market for Garoppolo has not been very robust, with few teams in on the 49ers quarterback.

While the Panthers go and get Mayfield from the Browns or they go and get Garoppolo from the 49ers, it seems as if they will likely make some sort of move in the weeks leading up to the draft. Drafting a quarterback is also still a real option, but the quarterback class in this year’s draft is not as star-studded as other years.
