Patriots Waive Former Jaguars RB James Robinson

Just a few years ago, it seemed as if James Robinson was set to be the running back of the future for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Now, he was just released by his third team — the New England Patriots.

Fast forward to the 2021 NFL Draft, the Jaguars selected former Clemson running back Travis Etienne to be the team’s lead back. The addition of Etienne put Robinson in an unfortunate situation.

In 2022, Robinson was traded to the New York Jets in exchange for a sixth-round pick. He played in four games with New York and had 29 carries for 85 rushing yards. After the season, he was set for unrestricted free-agency.

In free-agency —just a few months ago— the New England Patriots and the 24-year-old back agreed to a two-year contract. The only kicker — there would be no guaranteed money in the deal for Robinson.

Field Yates of ESPN reported on Monday evening that Robinson would be released by the Patriots, a move that would save New England $1.61 million in cap space.
