Source: MRI Confirms Torn Achilles For Cam Akers

An MRI confirmed that Minnesota Vikings running back Cam Akers suffered a torn left Achilles on Sunday vs the Atlanta Falcons, a source told The Sports Place.

This is not the first Achilles tear for Akers, who as a member of the Los Angeles Rams in 2021, tore his right Achilles.

Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell told the media after the game vs the Falcons that an Achilles injury was the initial fear: “Cam Akers, we believe has an Achilles injury. We can’t confirm the severity of that at this time, but that is what we’re fearing.”

Akers was acquired by the Vikings ahead of Week Three this season in exchange for a conditional sixth-round pick. He played in six games for Minnesota, carrying the ball 38 times for 138 yards and a rushing touchdown. He provided a stable veteran presence alongside starting running back Alexander Mattison.

The 24-year-old Akers is in the final year of his rookie contract. He’s scheduled to be a restricted free-agent after this season. The former second-round pick should have a market, though his injury history could come up as a cause for concern.

For the Vikings, second-year running back Ty Chandler will see an increased role in the absence of Akers. He was the Vikings’ fifth-round draft pick in 2022.
