With the recent trade request that Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson made public on Monday morning (3/27), the implications for the rest of Baltimore’s offseason could prove to be monumental for the future of their team.
Here, we will be looking toward the NFL Draft since the likely asking price for the former league MVP would START at 2 first-round picks. With some of the most QB-needy teams sitting within the top 10 in the 2023 NFL Draft order, a possible trade could be league-altering.
Predictions are near impossible at this point as not much information has been released. Some of the top suitors do include the Atlanta Falcons (pick 8), the Indianapolis Colts (Pick 4), and the Las Vegas Raiders (Pick 7). Any one of these teams, if they were to trade for Jackson, would most likely need to include their top pick in this year’s draft and possibly next year as well.
As for the Ravens: They currently own the number 22 overall pick in the first round and will likely be keeping that pick if a trade were to happen. In the occurrence of a trade for Jackson, the Ravens swiftly enter the quarterback sweepstakes. Whether or not they select a quarterback with this year’s pick could be a tricky prediction as well.
The Ravens’ offense is tailored to Lamar Jackson’s strengths and to implement a completely different quarterback into their system would be cause for a total playbook revamp. Quarterback Anthony Richardson out of Florida has many of the same strengths as Jackson, though. While he may be less elusive, he makes up for it with his size and monster arm.
Or, there could be a different route the Ravens take and end up selecting a quarterback in next year’s quarterback-heavy class. Names like Caleb Williams of USC, Drake Maye of UNC, and Jaden Daniels of LSU are all likely to be entering the 2024 NFL Draft.
The Ravens could also take a rather underrated quarterback in my opinion — Jordan Travis of FSU. He is very mobile with a solid arm and will be a player to watch for the Heisman trophy.
If a Lamar Jackson trade were to go through, the Baltimore Ravens would quickly become a major team to watch come Draft season. Ravens fans — stay on the edge of your seat.
