Williams, Daniels Forego Combine Workouts: Who Plans To Compete?

Williams, Daniels Forego Combine Workouts: Who Plans To Compete?

Two of the top-three projected quarterbacks in the 2024 NFL Draft, USC’s Caleb Williams and LSU’s Jayden Daniels, will not throw at the Draft Combine in Indianapolis this week, according to multiple reports.

Daniels is shying away from throwing at the Combine as he plans to throw at LSU’s Pro Day, and Williams plans to do the same at USC’s Pro Day. Both prospects will take part in interviews and meetings with teams at the Combine, but won’t workout until their respective Pro Days.

Williams projects to be the top pick in this draft and Daniels, who had shot into the first-round pick conversation after winning the Heisman Trophy, is ranked No. 7 on TSP Draft Analyst Lincoln Heimbach’s Big Board.

2017 No. 1 overall pick Baker Mayfield was the last top-selected quarterback that elected to workout at the Draft Combine– Williams and Daniels electing against the Combine shouldn’t come as a surprise.

North Carolina QB Drake Maye, who is the third of the top-three projected quarterbacks, is also not expected to throw and participate in the drills at the combine, as NFL Insider Josina Anderson reported on Tuesday morning. Mostly mocked as the No. 2 QB in the draft, Maye will look to prove his standing in team interviews.

Jordan Schultz and Ian Rapoport reported late on Sunday night that other top QB’s, JJ McCarthy, Bo Nix, Michael Penix Jr, and Spencer Rattler all plan on throwing this week along with Maye. All four project to be potential top-100 picks in the NFL Draft come April. A big performance could cause any of these guys’ draft stock to skyrocket.

Other quarterbacks who have been invited to the Scouting Combine — Notre Dame’s Sam Hartman, Kentucky’s Devin Leary, Tennessee’s Joe Milton III, Tulane’s Michael Pratt, Western Kentucky’s Austin Reed, BYU’s Kedon Slovis, and Florida State’s Jordan Travis.

Quarterbacks are scheduled to workout on Saturday alongside the wide receivers and running backs.
