Jameson Williams, 4 Others Suspended For Illegal Gambling

Jameson Williams, 4 Others Suspended For Illegal Gambling

The NFL announced on Friday morning that three players — Lions wide receiver Quintez Cephus and safety CJ Moore along with Commanders defensive end Shaka Toney have been suspended indefinitely for violating the league’s gambling policy. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network first reported the news.

Shortly after the announcement, the Lions released Cephus and Moore from the team.

Cephus was drafted by the Lions in the 5th round of the 2020 NFL draft and posted solid numbers in 2020 and 2021, but only played in four games in 2022.

CJ Moore had been with Detroit since 2019, posting 48 career total tackles and grabbing an interception.

A pair of wide receivers from Detroit, Jameson Williams and Stanley Berryhill, have also been suspended for violating the league’s gambling policy. Their suspension is six games.

Williams was set to be an emerging wide receiver for the Lions in 2023 after being limited in 2022 due to recovery from a torn ACL.

The former Alabama wide receiver is believed to have gambled on a college football game within the Lions’ facility — leading to his shorter suspension.

Shaka Toney was a former seventh-round draft pick by the Commanders back in 2021. He played in all 16 games in 2022, totaling 16 total tackles and 1.5 sacks.

The NFL said in a press release that the league uncovered “no evidence” that indicated that a game was compromised or that the players used inside information.
