The first week of Major League Baseball is complete and there were some surprising wins and losses for teams. The Rays are the only remaining undefeated team, while the 2022 NL Champion Phillies are 1-5. Where will they rank? Let’s find out.
At The Top: Atlanta Braves (5-1)
The Braves won two out of three from the Nationals and swept the Cardinals on the road. Austin Riley is raking and they got two great starts from Dylan Dodd and Bryce Elder.
2. Milwaukee Brewers (5-1)
The Brewers took two out of three from the Cubs and swept the Mets. Milwaukee is really hitting the ball well, putting up 35 runs in the last four games.
3. Tampa Bay Rays (6-0)
The Rays are the only undefeated team left. The only reason they aren’t higher is because they have played the Tigers and Nationals. Wander Franco is playing out of his mind.
4. Los Angeles Dodgers (4-2)
The Dodgers split with the D-Backs and swept a two-game series against the Rockies. Will Smith has been one of the best hitters in baseball so far.
5. New York Yankees (4-2)
The Yankees took two out of three from the Giants and Phillies. New York’s pitching has been very good. Gerrit Cole has only given up one run in his first two starts.
6. Houston Astros (3-4)
The reigning champs have had a rough start to the season. They split with the White Sox and lost two against the lowly Tigers. All of their losses have been close games. With an easy schedule coming up, I expect them to win those close games coming up.
7. Cleveland Guardians (5-2)
Cleveland won three games against the Mariners and two against the A’s. They are winning in many different ways. That’s what it takes to make a run in the postseason.
8. San Diego Padres (3-3)
The Padres split with two division foes in the Rockies and D-Backs. The acquisition of Xander Bogaerts has been huge for them.
9. St. Louis Cardinals (2-4)
The Cardinals won two games against the Blue Jays and then decided not to hit against the Braves. They had opportunities, but couldn’t come through. Paul Goldschmidt is once again looking like an MVP candidate.
10. New York Mets (3-4)
The Mets looked great against Miami, but only scored 6 runs in three games against the Brew Crew. And they all came in one game. Their lineup has to start doing something.
11. Texas Rangers (4-2)
The Rangers offense looked unstoppable against the Phillies in their sweep. Then, they played the O’s and couldn’t buy a run. They were able to get one game. They have the talent, but they need consistent production if they want to make the playoffs.
12. Los Angeles Angels (4-2)
The Angels got two against both the A’s and Mariners. Shohei Ohtani just keeps getting better. They need Anthony Rendon to start earning his money instead of making it while watching from the dugout.
13. Toronto Blue Jays (3-3)
The Jays took two from the Cards and will win the series against Kansas City. Vladdy Jr. is starting to get hot.
14. Minnesota Twins (4-2)
Minnesota swept the Royals and lost two against the Marlins. They just couldn’t score in the last two games. The Joey Gallo experiment looks like it might be paying off.
15. Seattle Mariners (2-5)
The Mariners were only able to get one game against both the Guardians and the Halos. Luis Castillo has yet to give up a run in 11.2 IP. Everybody else hasn’t been that great on the mound.
16. Philadelphia Phillies (1-5)
The Phils got swept by the Rangers and were only able to take one against the Yanks. They have one of the easiest schedules in the league for the next few weeks, so they’ll look to take advantage.
17. Chicago White Sox (3-3)
The White Sox split with the Astros and are going to lose the series against San Fran. Yoan Moncada has been incredible at the plate.
18. Arizona Diamondbacks (3-3)
The D-Backs split with the Dodgers and Padres. They will definitely take that. The offense has done basically nothing and they are sitting at .500.
19. San Francisco Giants (2-3)
The Giants won one against the Yankees and will win the series against the Chi Sox. The offense is starting to pick up. Thairo Estrada is batting over .400 at the plate.
20. Baltimore Orioles (3-3)
The O’s won on Opening Day against the Red Sox and took two out of three against the Rangers. Adam Frazier has proven to be a great acquisition for the Orioles so far.
21. Miami Marlins (3-4)
Miami got one against the Mets and won the series against Minnesota. They can be a great team if they start hitting..
22. Chicago Cubs (2-3)
Chicago was able to win one game against the Brewers and split against the Reds. This offense has the potential to put up a lot of runs.
23. Pittsburgh Pirates (4-2)
The Pirates lost two against the Reds, but were able to sweep the Red Sox on the road. Very impressive to go on the road and sweep a decent team like the Red Sox. Can they build off this momentum? Well, their next three opponents are tough: White Sox, Astros, Cardinals.
24. Boston Red Sox (2-4)
They won the series against Baltimore before getting swept by Pittsburgh. They can put up runs in a hurry, but pitching is a problem. The offense is led by AL Player of the Week Adam Duvall.
25. Cincinnati Reds (3-2)
The Reds are above .500! They were able to win two against the Pirates and split with the Cubs. They play the Phillies, Braves, and Rays coming up.
26. Colorado Rockies (2-4)
The Rockies were able to win their first two games of the season, but have lost four in a row. Kris Bryant has had a hit in every game.
27. Detroit Tigers (2-4)
The Tigers beat the Astros twice. Yes, you read that correctly. Matt Vierling has been a great pickup for them. He just went 4/5 with a homerun on Monday.
28. Oakland Athletics (2-4)
Oakland took one against both the Angels and Guardians. They have been playing decent ball. Esteury Ruiz could definitely be something for them in center.
29. Washington Nationals (1-5)
The Nationals beat the Braves for their only win. Lane Thomas has been their best hitter by far.
30. Kansas City Royals (1-5)
The Royals were able to beat the Jays. I thought their pitching would be bad and their offense would be good. It has been the opposite so far this season.
